This isn’t just applicable to Christianity — I find it very similar to the way I am encouraged to be like Muhammad(SAW) — but all religions. If you worship God or revere a prophet, and simply try to be similar to him, you’re accomplishing nothing. You are only going to make yourself appear like him to make yourself feel good. When you truly believe in everything that makes that person who they are, and act on those beliefs, then you can be a believer and person of faith. 

You could even apply it to the reveration (yes i just made that up) of humanitarians, scientists, role models, characters in a book, people in general. Don’t imitate one’s behavior and actions. Make them your own.
